“Joseph Villa’s titanic April 25, 1991 Bargemusic traversal of Rachmaninoff’s Second Sonata has become the stuff of legend in piano circles. Villa played the work three times at Bargemusic over the course of a few days, this first performance having been a particularly fiery and impassioned reading. The recording circulated on cassette amongst collectors soon after the performance was captured on tape, arousing great interest in a pianist who sadly died a few years later of AIDS-related illness at the age of 46.”
